🌍 About Mombasa

Mombasa is Kenya's coast: a Swahili-Arab-Indian port city, not a safari town. The thing to see is Fort Jesus, the coral-stone fortress the Portuguese built in 1593 to guard the spice route — it changed hands nine times in bloody sieges and now anchors the Old Town, a warren of carved wooden doors and balconied Omani houses you can walk in an afternoon. Eat samaki wa kupaka: whole fish grilled, then bathed in a coconut-and-tamarind sauce — the dish the coast does better than anywhere inland. For breakfast, mahamri, the cardamom-coconut doughnuts, with spiced chai. Come January to March or July to October — dry, sunny, calm seas for dhow trips. Skip April-May, the long rains, when humidity is brutal and the beaches empty out.
