For street food, skip the giant Shilin crowds and go to Raohe night market: the thing to eat is hujiao bing, a peppery pork-and-scallion bun slapped onto a clay-oven wall until the crust blisters. Din Tai Fung opened its first xiao long bao counter in this city too. Beyond food, ride to Beitou for sulphur hot springs inside the city limits. Come October–November or March–May for mild, dry days; July–September is hot, soupy, and typhoon-prone — worth it only if the fare is unbeatable.
