Albuquerque sits at 5,300 feet where the Rio Grande splits the high desert, and the thing it's genuinely known for is the International Balloon Fiesta (October 3–11 in 2026), the world's largest — 500-plus balloons lifting off at dawn, held here because a local wind pattern called the "box" lets pilots drift out and steer back to where they started.
