🌍 About Jeddah

Jeddah's draw is Al-Balad, the old town: tower houses built from Red Sea coral limestone, five and six storeys high, faced with carved wooden window screens called rawasheen. It earned UNESCO listing in 2014, and Nassif House shows how the merchant families who grew rich off the Mecca pilgrim trade actually lived. The food here is Hejazi, not the Najdi cooking of Riyadh — order sayadieh, Red Sea fish (usually grouper) over rice in a deep caramelized-onion broth, the city's fishing heritage on a plate. Come November to March, when days sit around 20–30°C and Al-Balad is walkable. Avoid June to August: temperatures clear 40°C and the humidity makes the old town brutal. Those summer months are the cheap-fare season, but you'll spend the trip in air-conditioning.
