🌍 About Manama

Manama is built on pearls — Bahrain was the Gulf's pearling capital before oil, and the UNESCO Pearling Path in neighbouring Muharraq traces the old divers' route past merchant houses and oyster beds. The Bab al-Bahrain gateway in the souq once stood right on the waterfront; it's now well inland, because everything seaward of it is reclaimed land. Wander the souq for gold, spices and frankincense, then eat machboos, the national dish: spiced rice with fish or chicken, cooked with dried lime and baharat. Bahrain is also famously relaxed by Gulf standards — alcohol is legal, which is why Saudis pour across the King Fahd Causeway on weekends. Come November to March, when days sit around 20°C. Avoid June to August, when it tops 40°C with heavy humidity — the cheap summer fares aren't worth the heat.
