🌍 About Hangzhou

Hangzhou wraps around West Lake — not a park next to the city but the thing the whole city is arranged around, ringed by causeways, pagodas and tea hills, and free to walk in. The slopes on the southwest shore grow Longjing (Dragon Well), China's most famous green tea; buy it leaf-fresh in Longjing village where it's actually grown rather than from a city shop. Order Dongpo pork — cubes of belly braised in soy and Shaoxing wine until they nearly collapse, named for Su Dongpo, the poet who governed here and dredged the lake. Come late September to November for crisp, dry air; for a few weeks in September the whole city smells of osmanthus blossom. Skip July and August, which are brutally hot and humid.
