Bonus Stop: Explore Shanghai on the Return (9h 30m Overnight Layover)

Your return leg lands at Shanghai Pudong (PVG) at 23:35 and the next flight doesn't depart until 09:05 the following morning — 9.5 hours at one of Asia's great cities. Here's how to use it.

• Timeline: Land 23:35 → clear immigration ≈00:30 → taxi by 00:45 → The Bund ≈01:45. Return by 07:00 (check-in closes ≈07:30 for 09:05 departure). That's roughly 4–5 hours in the city.
• Getting there: The Maglev and metro both close before midnight from Pudong. Take a Didi (Chinese Uber) or metered taxi — roughly ¥200–280 each way (≈€25–35), 60–75 minutes to the Bund.
• The Bund at night: The Lujiazui skyline — the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and World Financial Center — lit across the Huangpu River is one of Asia's most dramatic views. At 2am the crowds have gone. Walk the riverside promenade, find a 24-hour café in the French Concession, or just stand there in the quiet watching the reflections on the Huangpu.
• Visa: Finnish and most EU passport holders qualify for China's transit visa-free programme (TWOV / 144h), which covers transits between two non-Chinese countries — Bali to Helsinki via Shanghai qualifies. Verify current requirements before planning to exit the terminal (mfa.gov.cn or the Chinese embassy in Helsinki).
• Rather sleep? The Novotel Shanghai Pudong Airport (5-minute free shuttle from Terminal 2) takes overnight walk-ins. A few hours of real sleep before the 9h 55m Boeing 787 flight home is a perfectly reasonable call — the seatback entertainment will still be there.
