Zonguldak is a Black Sea coal town, and that's the point of going — not despite the mines but because of them. Founded in 1849 as the port for Turkey's only mineable hard-coal basin, it built the country's sole mining museum, where you can walk through a full-scale "training mine" and feel what 200 years of underground work was actually like. The Varagel Tunnel, dug 75 years ago to haul coal to the docks, is now a seaside pedestrian path. Eat hamsi tava — fresh Black Sea anchovies floured and pan-fried whole, served with lemon and onion salad; locals also do tirit, roasted minced beef layered over soft dough. Come July–August: the coast is rainy most of the year, and that's the warm, dry-ish window for Kapuz beach. Winter is grey and wet.
