🌍 About São Tomé

São Tomé sits on the equator off Central Africa, a Portuguese-speaking volcanic island that was the world's biggest cocoa producer in 1908 and never quite recovered — its old plantation estates, the *roças*, stand half-ruined and worth touring. The island's signature is Pico Cão Grande, a 370-metre needle of phonolite rock that juts straight out of the rainforest like a tooth; you'll see it on every postcard. Eat calulú, a slow-cooked stew of dried smoked fish, palm oil and bitter folha leaves. And buy chocolate from Claudio Corallo's factory in the capital — a former coffee farmer whose bars turn up in Michelin kitchens. Come June to September, the *gravana* dry season: cooler, less rain, better for hiking and beaches. Skip the heavy rains of March-May.
