🌍 About Cotonou
Cotonou is Benin's economic capital, and the thing to do is take a boat out to Ganvié on Lake Nokoué — a town of 20,000-plus people living in stilt houses over the water. The Tofinu built it centuries ago to escape Fon slave raiders, who were religiously forbidden from fighting on water. On land, Dantokpa is the largest open-air market in West Africa: roughly 20 hectares, with a whole section selling Vodun ingredients (Benin is the birthplace of the religion). Eat akpan, a tangy fermented-corn pudding with pepper sauce. Come November to March — the dry season, cooler and far easier for boat trips and market wandering. April to October is hot and wet, with the heaviest rains around June.
