Edremit sits at the head of an Aegean gulf that grows much of Turkey's olive oil — the slopes are wall-to-wall olive groves, and the early-harvest oil pressed here is the genuinely good stuff. Behind the town rises Mount Ida (Kaz Dağı), the mythological peak where Paris judged the three goddesses; it's now a national park so oxygen-rich it's nicknamed the lungs of Turkey, and you legally can't hike it without a guide. Skip the town center and base in Adatepe, a preserved Ottoman stone village in the foothills with Turkey's first olive-oil museum. Eat the wild mountain greens (ot) and anything cooked in olive oil. Come May-June or September for warm sea and walkable hills; July-August is hot and packed with Turkish holidaymakers, when both rooms and fares spike.
