🌍 About Asmara
Asmara is the most intact Italian Art Deco city anywhere — around 400 modernist buildings went up under colonial rule in the 1930s, which is why it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The one to find is the Fiat Tagliero, a 1938 petrol station built like an aeroplane, with two 60-foot concrete wings cantilevered out from a central tower and nothing underneath holding them up. The Italians also left a café culture that genuinely stuck: order a macchiato standing at the bar like the locals, and there's real gelato. For a proper meal, eat zigni — a fiery berbere-spiced meat stew you scoop up with injera. At 2,300m the air stays mild all year. Come October to May for warm, dry days; skip July and August, the only properly wet months.
