🌍 About Nice
Nice was Italian until 1860 — it belonged to the House of Savoy, and that history is still on the plate. The local thing to eat is socca: a thin chickpea-flour pancake cooked in a wood-fired oven and eaten hot, blistered and peppery, standing up. Get it in Vieux Nice from Chez Pipo or Chez Thérésa, not a sit-down restaurant. Also try pissaladière, a tart of slow-cooked onions, anchovies and black olives. One practical warning: the beaches are smooth grey pebbles, not sand — bring flip-flops or rent a lounger. Come in September: the sea is warm from a summer of heating, the August crowds have gone, and fares drop.
