🌍 About Kutaisi
Kutaisi is the reason cheap Caucasus fares exist — it's a Wizz Air low-cost hub, so a deal here often beats flying into Tbilisi. The thing actually worth the trip is Gelati Monastery just outside town: a 1106 complex whose interior is covered in genuinely well-preserved medieval mosaics and frescoes, still UNESCO-listed. Bagrati Cathedral in the city gets the postcards, but UNESCO stripped its World Heritage status in 2017 over a heavy-handed modern rebuild — go for the hilltop view, not the authenticity. Eat khachapuri Imeruli, the flat round local version stuffed with tangy sulguni cheese, and browse the Green Bazaar for it. Come April–June or September–October for warm, dry days; July–August is hot and humid, and winters are grey and wet, worth it only for rock-bottom fares.
