🌍 About Warsaw
Warsaw's Old Town looks medieval but is barely older than your grandparents: 85% of the city was flattened in WWII, and the Old Town was rebuilt brick by brick from Bernardo Bellotto's 18th-century paintings (he signed them "Canaletto"). It's UNESCO-listed for the reconstruction itself. For the city that actually survived, cross the Vistula to Praga — pre-war tenements, courtyard shrines, galleries in old factories. Eat at a bar mleczny, the subsidized communist-era "milk bar" canteen still ladling out pierogi and żurek (sour rye soup) for a few złoty. Come May to September, when the riverbank beaches open and the terraces fill; winter is grey, cold and dark, worth it mainly for cheap fares and empty queues.
