🌍 About Split
Split is built *inside* a Roman ruin: Diocletian's Palace isn't a fenced-off monument but the living center of town, with the emperor's 4th-century walls now holding apartments, cafés, and a cathedral that was once his mausoleum. Walk into the Vestibule, a domed antechamber where a cappella klapa singers test the acoustics most days. Eat pašticada — Dalmatian beef marinated for a day in wine and vinegar, slow-cooked, and served with gnocchi. Split is also the ferry gateway to Hvar, Brač, and Vis, so it pairs naturally with island time. Come May–June or September–October: warm sea, walkable heat, smaller crowds. July and August are genuinely sweltering and packed, and the cheap shoulder-season fares happen to land in the nicer months — a rare case where the budget timing is also the better one.
