🌍 About Kunming

Kunming is China's "Spring City" — at 1,890m on the Yunnan plateau, it skips the brutal summers and winters that hit the rest of the country, staying mild most of the year. The dish to order is guoqiao mixian (crossing-the-bridge rice noodles): a bowl of scalding chicken broth arrives with raw sliced meat, vegetables and noodles on the side, and you cook them at the table by tipping them in. The genuinely odd sight is at Green Lake Park in winter, when tens of thousands of red-billed gulls fly down from Siberia and locals feed them by hand from November to March. Most people use Kunming as the gateway to Yunnan — Dali, Lijiang, the Stone Forest 90km east. Go March–May for flowers and dry skies; June–August is the rainy season.
