Beirut climbs straight up from the Mediterranean, and the part to walk is Mar Mikhael and Gemmayzeh — adjoining quarters of Ottoman-era houses with arched triple windows, now packed with bars and galleries along Armenia Street and the St Nicholas Stairs. Go to the Sursock Museum, a free modern-art collection in a 1912 villa that reopened after the 2020 port blast tore through it. For breakfast eat manoushe — flatbread baked to order and smeared with za'atar and olive oil, folded over for about a dollar. It's the real everyday food here, not mezze. Come April–May or September–November: warm, dry, and far less crowded than the July–August beach-season crush, when the heat and prices both spike. Winter is mild but wet, and that's when fares are cheapest.
