🌍 About Oran

Oran is the birthplace of raï — the rough, electric pop that took Algerian songs and plugged them into Western beats in the 1920s, and gave the world Cheb Khaled. The fort to climb for is Santa Cruz, a Spanish stronghold on Mount Murdjajo above the bay (Oran was Spanish for two long stretches, which is why the harbour bristles with old defences). Eat karantika, the city's own street food: a chickpea-flour custard baked golden, sliced into a baguette with harissa and cumin — invented here under Spanish siege when chickpea flour was all that was left. Camus set *The Plague* in Oran, and described it as deliberately ordinary; he undersold it. Come April–June or October–November for warm, dry days without the July–August heat and crowds.
