🌍 About Ponta Delgada

The Azores are nine volcanic islands in the mid-Atlantic, a four-hour hop from Lisbon and closer to Portugal's deal fares than you'd think. On São Miguel, the main island, eat cozido das Furnas — a meat-and-vegetable stew buried in the ground at Furnas and slow-cooked for hours by volcanic steam, dug up at lunchtime. The other unmissable sight is Sete Cidades, twin crater lakes (one blue, one green) sitting in a single caldera. Come June to September for the warmest, driest weather and the calmest seas for whale watching; blue whales pass through on their spring migration.
