Honolulu sits on the south shore of Oahu, and Waikiki is the famous strip — but the better local move is buying poke by the pound at a Foodland supermarket counter, where ahi tuna comes raw, cubed, and dressed in shoyu and sesame oil. Get a plate lunch at Rainbow Drive-In too: two scoops rice, mac salad, chicken katsu. Trade an hour of Waikiki for Diamond Head, the extinct crater you can hike for a clean coastline view, and Pearl Harbor, where the USS Arizona memorial floats over the ship that sank in 1941. Come April–May or September–October: warm, dry, and the cheapest fares and hotels of the year, often half off peak rates. Winter brings more rain but also huge North Shore surf and whales offshore.
