Freetown was founded in the 1790s as a home for freed and formerly enslaved people, and that history shapes the city — Krio is the lingua franca and the older houses downtown have a distinct wooden, balconied "Krio board house" look. The national landmark, the 400-year-old Cotton Tree where the first settlers gathered to pray, fell in a 2023 storm, but the real draw is just south of town: the white-sand peninsula beaches at River No. 2 and Tokeh, among the best in West Africa and barely an hour out. Eat cassava leaf stew — pounded greens slow-cooked with palm oil and smoked fish over rice — or grilled fish from the plastic-chair stalls along Lumley Beach. Come November to April for dry, clear weather; skip July to September, when Freetown is one of the wettest capitals anywhere.
