🌍 About Dakar
Dakar sits on the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Africa. The thing to do is the 20-minute ferry to Gorée Island, a car-free UNESCO island of ochre colonial houses and the House of Slaves, a sobering memorial to the Atlantic slave trade. Eat thieboudienne (ceebu jën), the national dish: fish stuffed with herbs over rice cooked in tomato and vegetable broth — order it at lunch, when it's freshest. Skip the touristy seafront restaurants; the good version is in a neighbourhood canteen. Come November to May, the dry season, when it's warm, sunny and barely rains. Avoid July to October — humid, wet, and the harmattan haze can dull the light.
