🌍 About Port Sudan
Port Sudan is Sudan's de facto capital — since war broke Khartoum in April 2023, the government, the UN, and the country's only functioning international airport all run out of this Red Sea port city. That context matters: this is a working wartime hub, not a holiday town, and it took drone strikes in May 2025. The real draw is offshore. Port Sudan is the launch point for Red Sea liveaboards to Sanganeb (the sea's only true atoll, walls dropping past 800m) and Sha'ab Rumi, where Cousteau sank his Conshelf II habitat in 1963 — the starfish-shaped quarters are still down there. Nearby lies the Umbria, an Italian freighter scuttled in 1940 with 360,000 bombs still in its holds. Diving season is February to June; February to April brings the schooling hammerheads.
