Monrovia is one of the few English-speaking capitals in West Africa, named after US President James Monroe and founded in the 1820s by freed African-Americans — a history you'll hear in the local Liberian English and see in the old "Congo Town" street names. The landmark to seek out isn't a monument but a ruin: the Ducor Hotel, an abandoned 1960s luxury high-rise on Ducor Hill, where the payoff is the panoramic view over the city and the Atlantic. Eat cassava leaf stew — chopped cassava greens slow-cooked with meat and palm oil over rice — and wash it down with local ginger beer. Come in the dry season, November to April (December–February is driest and coolest).
