🌍 About Chengdu
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan — a province whose cuisine is one of China's most exported and most often imitated, but rarely matched outside the city itself, where the original mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, and hot pot are still measured against centuries-old standards. The city is also home to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, where the world's most successful conservation programme has built semi-wild enclosures for the bears that have become Sichuan's global symbol. Beyond the panda base, the teahouse culture of People's Park and the face-changing performances of Sichuan opera show a city that takes its leisure seriously, and the surrounding province opens onto some of China's most spectacular landscapes: the Tibetan plateau to the west, the colossal Leshan Buddha to the south, and the sacred mountain of Emei in between.
