🌍 About Xi’an
Xi'an is China's most layered ancient capital — capital of 13 dynasties including Han and Tang, eastern terminus of the Silk Road, and home to the Terracotta Warriors (8,000 life-sized clay soldiers in Emperor Qin Shi Huang's 2,200-year-old mausoleum, 30 km east of the city). The 14 km Ming-era City Wall still encircles the old town and you can bike the full loop in 2 hours, with the Bell Tower at its centre and the Drum Tower a short walk west. The Muslim Quarter behind the Drum Tower is the city's street-food heart — Hui Muslim Chinese cuisine: roujiamo (the "Chinese hamburger" — slow-cooked pork or beef in a flatbread bun), biang-biang noodles, yangrou paomo (lamb soup with hand-torn bread), and persimmon cakes. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda dates to 652 AD and was built by Tang-dynasty monk Xuanzang to house Buddhist scriptures he carried back from India. High-speed rail from Xi'an reaches Beijing in 4h 15m, Shanghai in 6h, Chengdu in 3h. Visa-free entry to China for EU citizens (incl. Hungarians) is in effect through end-2026.
