📚 Riga Travel Guide
🇩🇰 Two countries, one trip — Copenhagen on the outbound
11 hours on the ground in Copenhagen between Halifax and Riga — long enough to see one of Northern Europe’s most walkable capitals without paying for a separate ticket.
Land at CPH 10:15 in the morning, don’t need to be back at the gate until 21:25 — that’s a full day in Denmark. The country is Schengen-area, so EU, UK, USA and Canadian passport holders walk through arrivals with no visa and no paperwork. June gives you roughly 17 hours of daylight (sunset is around 21:50) — by the time your second flight boards, the sun is still up.
Realistic 11-hour plan: Drop your cabin bag at the CPH luggage storage (Terminal 3, near the train station, 75–85 DKK per piece for the day). Take Metro M2 from CPH Lufthavnen straight to Kongens Nytorv — 15 minutes, runs every 4–6 min, 36 DKK (≈ C$7) one-way. From there:
- 11:00 — Nyhavn (5 min walk from Kongens Nytorv). The 17th-century harbour with the painted townhouses you’ve seen on every Denmark postcard. Free.
- 12:00 — Amalienborg + Royal Guard changing (10 min walk from Nyhavn). The ceremony at noon is free; the palace courtyard is open without a ticket.
- 12:45 — Little Mermaid statue (15 min walk along the harbour). Smaller than tourists expect — that’s the running joke — but it’s the photo nobody skips.
- 13:30 — Lunch in the Latin Quarter or at Torvehallerne (10 min walk back south). Smørrebrød — the open-faced rye sandwich — runs 60–110 DKK at a counter, 180–250 DKK at Aamanns 1921. Hot-dog stands (pølsevogn) sit on most corners at 35–55 DKK.
- 15:00 — Rosenborg Castle + the King’s Garden (15 min walk). The crown jewels sit in the basement (130 DKK entry, 30 min); the gardens around the castle are free and full of locals reading in the grass.
- 16:30 — Strøget shopping street → Tivoli Gardens (Strøget walk takes 20 min end-to-end; Tivoli is 145 DKK entry, opens until 23:00 in summer). Skip Tivoli if you’d rather see Christiania — the freetown commune across the harbour, free to walk through, no photos on Pusher Street.
- 19:30 — Back to CPH via Metro M2. Be airside by 20:25 (one hour before boarding) to clear the Schengen-exit passport check.
Currency: Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro — 1 DKK ≈ C$0.19. Cards work everywhere; you don’t need cash. Skip the airport exchange counter, the rate is poor.
Two-country bonus: by the time you land in Riga at 23:45, you’ve covered Denmark and Latvia on one ticket. Two capitals, two Schengen stamps in your passport history, one C$686 fare.

🌍 About Riga
Riga reveals itself in layers — wandering through the Art Nouveau district where every doorway frames sculpted flourishes, then ducking into the vaulted zeppelin hangars of the Central Market, which spill with smoked fish, dense rye bread, and grey peas stewed with bacon. In the evenings, locals claim candlelit tables along Terbatas iela, pairing dark herbal liqueur Black Balsam with shots of chilled vodka. Come late June, the city holds Jāņi — Midsummer — when flower crowns appear on heads, fires burn outside city limits, and the whole country stays awake through the shortest night.
