🌍 About Tivat

Tivat is most travelers' way into the Bay of Kotor — the regional airport is here, a few minutes from the water — but it's worth a stop in its own right. Porto Montenegro, the superyacht marina at the center of town, was built on the former Arsenal, a Yugoslav naval shipyard; the Naval Heritage Museum still keeps the old submarines, torpedoes and uniforms from when this was a military base, not a billionaires' harbor. Eat crni rižoto, the squid-ink black risotto that turns your teeth gray and tastes deeply of the Adriatic. Tivat is flatter and lower-key than Kotor next door, and a good base for both. Come late May to early October for warm sea and long evenings; July and August are hottest, priciest and most crowded. Winter is quiet and many waterfront places close.
