🌍 About Chania

Chania sits on Crete's northwest coast, built around a Venetian harbour the Egyptians later capped with a minaret-shaped lighthouse — which is why it's the "Egyptian lighthouse" and not quite like any other in Greece. The harbourfront tavernas are tourist-priced; the better eating is a street back. Order bougatsa, but the Chania kind: filo filled with local mizithra cheese (pichtogalo), faintly sour, dusted with sugar — not the sweet custard version they make in Heraklion. Iordanis has done it since 1924 and it's worth the queue. Come May–June or September–October: warm sea, walkable heat, and Samaria Gorge open for the day-hike. July–August is genuinely hot and packed.
