Corfu is the one major Greek island the Ottomans never took — four centuries under Venice instead, and you taste it. In Corfu Town the distinctive spot is the Liston, an arcaded terrace of cafés the French built to mimic Paris's Rue de Rivoli, fronting the cricket pitch the British left behind — the layered foreign rule is the whole point of the place. Come in May, early June, or September: warm and swimmable without the July–August crush, and shoulder-season fares are cheaper. Skip mid-summer if you can — it's hot, packed and priciest.
