Akureyri is the unhurried capital of Iceland's north, set at the head of the country's longest fjord with snow-capped peaks rising on either side. The little centre charms with red-roofed houses, a botanical garden that flourishes improbably close to the Arctic Circle, and even heart-shaped red traffic lights.
