🌍 About Santo Domingo
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, and its capital, Santo Domingo, is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the Americas — its Zona Colonial holds the first cathedral and first university built in the New World, and Calle Las Damas is the oldest paved street on the continent. Most visitors only see the all-inclusive beach strips of Punta Cana; the colonial city is the part worth a day. Eat la bandera, the everyday lunch of rice, red beans and stewed meat, but the real local breakfast is mangú — mashed green plantains with fried cheese, salami and eggs. Come December to April for dry, warm weather; that's also peak season and peak prices. Cheaper fares land in the August-October hurricane window — a real gamble worth watching the forecast for.
