🌍 About Yaoundé
Yaoundé sits on seven hills at around 700m, which keeps it noticeably cooler and less sticky than coastal Douala. It's Cameroon's political capital — government town, not a tourist one — so the real draw is just south: Mefou National Park, about 45 minutes out, a primate sanctuary run by Ape Action Africa where rescued gorillas, chimps and drills live in forest enclosures. It's one of the better places in Central Africa to see them up close. Eat ndolé, the national dish: bitterleaf greens cooked down with ground peanuts, crayfish and smoked fish into a thick, nutty stew, served with bobolo (fermented cassava). Come November to February, the dry season — warm days, cooler evenings, sometimes a haze of Harmattan dust. Avoid the heavy rains of March to October.
