🌍 About Shenyang
Shenyang was the Qing dynasty's first capital, and its Imperial Palace — a smaller, older cousin of Beijing's Forbidden City — is where the Manchus built their empire before seizing Beijing in 1644. It's the only other surviving imperial palace in China and the main reason to come. A few minutes away on Zhongjie pedestrian street, Laobian has been folding jiaozi since 1829; their pan-stirred fillings are the thing to order, not whatever your hotel recommends. For darker history, the 9.18 Museum sits on the spot where the 1931 Mukden Incident gave Japan its pretext to invade Manchuria. This is Dongbei, China's cold northeast, so come April–October; January averages around −8°C with a punishing wind off the plains — worth it only for the ice-and-lantern festivals and the cheapest fares of the year.
