🌍 About Banjul

Banjul is one of Africa's smallest, quietest capitals — a low-rise town on St Mary's Island at the mouth of the Gambia River, and most visitors actually base themselves down the coast at Kololi or Cape Point and come in for a day. The thing to see is Albert Market on Liberation Avenue: a working three-part market for cloth, produce and crafts, busiest and best in the early morning. Arch 22, the 35-metre monument to the 1994 coup, is worth it mainly for the café view over town. Eat domoda, the national dish — a peanut-and-meat stew over white rice, richer than it sounds. Come November to February: dry, cooler nights, few mosquitoes. Avoid July-September, the humid rains.
