China Southern runs the largest free transit-accommodation scheme of any airline in this series —
nine Chinese cities, a published hotel-grading system, and named service counters at every airport that
offers it. It is also the most bureaucratic, and the part that decides whether you get a bed is not your
layover length but the letter of your booking class.
“offers passengers who are qualified for free transit accommodation a free stay for one night
(including a free breakfast) and transportation between the terminal and the hotel”. Breakfast and
transfers are inside the offer, not bolted on — which already puts it ahead of Royal Brunei’s
Business-only Empire night.
Who qualifies
You need a China Southern ticket (codeshares count, ground virtual flights do not), connecting at one
of its hubs, with both segments on the same PNR and seats confirmed. Then the connection
window:
- 6 to 30 hours for domestic-to-international/regional and international-to-international
connections, under the standing rules. - 6 to 144 hours for international-to-international under the limited-time policy —
six days, which is a stopover in all but name.
Then the cabin gate, which is where most people fall out. For non-intercontinental
connections, ordinary passengers need an international/regional segment in F, J, C, D, I or O — that
is business and premium only. Platinum cardholders get any cabin except G.
For intercontinental connections the door opens far wider: F, J, C, D, I, O, W, S, Y,
P, B, M, H, K, U, A, L, Q and E all qualify. China Southern defines intercontinental as travel between Asia
and Europe, Oceania, America or Africa — so a European flying to Australia via Guangzhou in ordinary
economy is squarely inside the scheme.
Asia to Europe, or anything else that crosses continents, you are on the generous list — deep
discount economy included. If you are merely connecting within Asia, you almost certainly need a business
fare. Check which of the two lists your ticket sits on before planning a night in the city.
Which hotel you get
China Southern grades its contracted hotels and publishes the definitions, which is rare and useful.

On the intercontinental policy, higher booking classes get one room per person; classes Z, T and N get
one room between two people. If you are put in a shared room, China Southern’s rule is that
same-gender passengers share, and if you refuse the arrangement you are
“deemed as giving up the right” with no compensation. You can pay the
difference at the counter for a single room.
Where you claim it
Online booking exists only for Guangzhou and Shenyang. In the other seven cities you go
to the counter. China Southern publishes exactly where each one is, which saves a lot of wandering:

The conditions people trip over
- Fly your coupons in order. Skip a segment or abandon the trip yourself and China
Southern will not provide the service. The one carve-out is passengers who check into the hotel and only
then abandon the onward trip. - Award tickets count. Mileage redemptions are treated as normal tickets — notably
more generous than several Gulf carriers. - Airline staff tickets are excluded in any booking status.
- Children under 12 need a guardian or a designated adult before accommodation is
arranged. - The hotels are outside the airport quarantine area. If you cannot clear immigration,
for your own reasons or customs’, there is no service. - If the online system cannot find you a room at your grade, go to the counter — China Southern
says its online room allocation is limited and the counter handles the rest.
A note on the date
The rules page China Southern publishes is headed Requirements (2024) and its limited-time
section is scoped to June–December 2024. The airline has not republished a 2026 version. I am
reporting it as what it is — the terms currently on China Southern’s own site, carrying a 2024
date — rather than asserting either that it has lapsed or that it runs forever. Chinese carriers and
Chinese transit policy have repeatedly rolled these windows forward without re-issuing the page. Confirm
at the counter or on 95539 before you build a night in Guangzhou into your plans.
Frequently asked questions
Does China Southern really give a free hotel?
Yes, and it is one of the more generous schemes published by any airline. China Southern states it gives qualifying transit passengers “a free stay for one night (including a free breakfast) and transportation between the terminal and the hotel”. The catch is not the benefit, it is the cabin-class table that decides who qualifies.
Which cities offer it?
Nine: Beijing, Changsha, Shenzhen, Urumqi, Guangzhou, Dalian, Wuhan, Shenyang and Zhengzhou. But online booking is only offered for Guangzhou and Shenyang. Everywhere else you go to the China Southern transfer service counter at the airport and staff arrange it on the spot.
How long does my connection need to be?
No less than 6 hours and no more than 30 hours for a domestic-to-international or international-to-international connection under the standing rules. The limited-time policy widened international-to-international to 144 hours.
What kind of hotel do I get?
Three graded tiers. Grade A for VIPs, first and business class on the international segment, and Sky Pearl Platinum members: four-star or above. Grade B for first/business on the domestic segment and Sky Pearl Gold and Silver: four-star or above with standard rooms. Grade C for everyone else: three-star or above. Grade C is usually one room shared between two passengers.
What will disqualify me?
Flying the coupons out of order, or abandoning the trip yourself. China Southern states plainly it will not provide the service in either case. Airline staff tickets are excluded outright. Your connecting tickets must also be on the same PNR with confirmed seats.
Do award tickets count?
Yes. China Southern states that “mileage redemption tickets are regarded as normal tickets” and follow the same standards. That is unusual — several carriers in this series exclude them.
