We read thirty-one airlines’ own terms. Twenty give you a room; eleven give you the stopover and a discount. And most of them quietly withdraw the offer if a shorter connection existed — which is exactly what a deliberately long layover is.

We read thirty-one airlines’ own published terms to answer one question: if you are stuck at their hub overnight, do you get a bed? The answer splits cleanly. Twenty carriers give you a room under stated conditions — one of them only if a room happens to be free. Eleven sell you the stopover, or a discount, and leave the bed to you. Every figure below is taken from the guide it links to, and each of those cites the airline’s own page.

The rule that disqualifies more people than any other
Ethiopian is the exception, and states it explicitly: passengers are accommodated “regardless of availability of alternative flights with shorter connecting time”. Royal Jordanian also carves out passengers travelling to or from North America.
The fare gates
Four carriers make the free hotel conditional on what you paid, which is worth knowing before you book the cheapest fare you can find:
| Airline | Minimum fare | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates | USD 450 one-way · USD 700 return — USD 500 / USD 1,200 if a flydubai flight is involved | Base fare + carrier-imposed fuel surcharge. The 450/700 figure is the same for all five origin regions Emirates lists |
| Gulf Air | USD 450 · USD 850 for two stopovers | Fare + carrier-imposed charges, tax excluded |
| SriLankan | USD 375 rising to USD 390 past 12h | Fare + YQ |
| Royal Jordanian | No cash figure — fare classes instead | Published class letters; promo and group fares excluded |
Where you actually claim it
This varies more than anything else, and getting it wrong is the difference between a bed and a bench:
- Before you leave home: Ethiopian issues the voucher at your origin airport. SriLankan needs it arranged at least 48 hours ahead. Etihad wants a call three days before.
- Online, in advance: Turkish (72 hours, or by country email), Air China, Qatar (booking reference and surname).
- At a desk on arrival: Xiamen (counters published per city, Quanzhou by phone), Turkish’s Hotel Desk, Emirates’ Dubai Connect desk, Hainan’s walk-up desks in Haikou.
The visa question, which decides everything
Every one of these hotels except Ethiopian’s in-terminal option is landside. If you cannot clear immigration, the voucher is worthless.
Which airlines do not have a programme
Worth stating, because absence is hard to prove and easy to assume:
- SAS — its Copenhagen stopover is flights only; accommodation is explicitly not included.
- Finnair — a stopover exists, but the newest archived copy of its own stopover page is from 2020, too stale for us to state current terms.
- China Southern — a real programme, but the only readable rules page covers 2024 only, with no mention of 2025 or 2026.
- Vietnam Airlines — its stopover programme has been suspended since 2023.
Frequently asked questions
Which airline gives the best free hotel on a long layover?
For ease of qualifying, Ethiopian — it is the only carrier that provides accommodation regardless of whether a shorter connection was available. For the most complete package, Emirates Dubai Connect, which includes hotel, transfers, all meals and a UAE entry visa, though it requires a fare of at least USD 450.
Why do airlines refuse the hotel on a long layover?
Most commonly because a shorter connection existed. Turkish, Gulf Air, Royal Jordanian and Emirates all require you to be on the shortest available connection, and Turkish applies this even when the shorter flight was fully booked. Other frequent reasons are holding two separate tickets, a promotional fare class, or a fare below the airline’s minimum.
Which airline has the longest free stopover?
Copa, at up to 15 days in Panama at no additional airfare, followed by TAP at 10 days in Lisbon or Porto. Neither includes the hotel — both offer discounts instead.
Do any of these include a visa?
Only Emirates includes a UAE entry visa as part of Dubai Connect, and even then issuance is at immigration’s discretion. Gulf Air’s own page does not promise a visa despite claims elsewhere, and SriLankan states explicitly that a hotel confirmation does not guarantee entry.
Can I get a free hotel on an award ticket?
Royal Jordanian explicitly includes award tickets in U and X classes, and U-class upgrades — unusual among these carriers. Most others either exclude award bookings or do not publish a position, so confirm directly.
