Malaysia Airlines does not put you in an airport hotel. It puts you on another aeroplane. The Bonus
Side Trip gives international passengers connecting through Kuala Lumpur a flight to one of eight
Malaysian destinations at no extra fare — which, if your layover is long enough to use it, is worth
considerably more than a night near the terminal.

One inconsistency worth knowing, because it works in your favour: Malaysia Airlines describes the offer
as a side trip to Peninsular Malaysia, but Kuching is in Sarawak, on Borneo. The published list
is the thing that counts, and Kuching is on it.
Who qualifies
- Flights operated by Malaysia Airlines only.
- Fare categories: Economy Basic, Economy Flex and Business Class. Nothing else.
- Your international itinerary must not originate from or terminate in Malaysia. This
is a transit benefit; if Malaysia is where you were going anyway, it does not apply. - Not applicable for travel between ASEAN destinations, from an international sector to
a Malaysian domestic sector, or between two Malaysian domestic sectors. - Promo codes and Enrich membership discounts cannot be used on these bookings — though Enrich
points and tier benefits still accrue as normal.
Jakarta via Kuala Lumpur, both ends are ASEAN and you are out. The offer is aimed at long-haul traffic
— Europe, Australia, Northeast Asia — passing through Kuala Lumpur on the way to somewhere
else.
“At no extra fare” is not “free”
Malaysia Airlines is careful with its wording and so should you be. The fare for the domestic
sector is waived. The taxes, surcharges and other applicable fees are explicitly
“not covered by Malaysia Airlines and shall be borne by the passenger”. On a
short domestic hop those are modest, but they are not nothing, and the number you see at checkout will not
be zero.
The airline also reserves the right to amend, suspend or withdraw the offer at any time without prior
notice, and notes that fares and availability vary by origin, destination and travel period.
The booking trap
Bonus Side Trip bookings are available only via malaysiaairlines.com and appointed Malaysia
Airlines agents. The airline states they are not supported on the mobile app. If
you go looking for it in the app, fail to find it, and conclude the programme is dead, that is the app’s
limitation rather than the offer’s. Use a browser.
Is it worth it?
Better than most things in this series, if your itinerary fits. A night in an airport hotel is a
consolation prize; four days in George Town or Kuching is a second holiday. The constraint is not the
benefit, it is the eligibility — long-haul, Malaysia Airlines metal, one of three fare families, and
Malaysia strictly as a transit point. Check those four before you fall in love with the idea.

Is the Bonus Side Trip free?
Not in Malaysia Airlines’ own words — and the distinction matters. The page never uses the word “free”. It says you get a flight to one of eight Malaysian destinations “at no extra fare – just pay the taxes”. The seat costs nothing; the taxes, surcharges and fees are yours, and Malaysia Airlines states plainly that they are not covered.
Where can I go?
Eight airports: Langkawi (LGK), Penang (PEN), Johor Bahru (JHB), Kota Bharu (KBR), Kuantan (KUA), Alor Setar (AOR), Kuala Terengganu (TGG) and Kuching (KCH). Note that Malaysia Airlines describes the offer as covering Peninsular Malaysia, yet Kuching is in Sarawak on Borneo — so the list is broader than the description.
Do I get a hotel?
No. This is not a transit-hotel programme at all. Malaysia Airlines no longer advertises a free layover hotel; what it offers instead is a domestic flight, which is a genuinely different and in some ways better proposition — you are not resting near the airport, you are spending a few days somewhere else entirely.
Which fares qualify?
Only Economy Basic, Economy Flex and Business Class bookings, on flights operated by Malaysia Airlines. Promo codes and Enrich membership discounts cannot be combined with it. Enrich points do still accrue normally.
Who is excluded?
Passengers whose international itinerary starts or ends in Malaysia — the whole point is that Malaysia is your transit, not your destination. It also does not apply to travel between ASEAN destinations, from an international sector to a Malaysian domestic sector, or between Malaysian domestic sectors.
