Diriyah is the one to make time for: the mud-brick birthplace of the Saudi state and a UNESCO site, where the restored At-Turaif district shows how the first Saudi dynasty lived before Riyadh was a city. In town, Masmak Fortress — the 1865 clay fort whose 1902 capture launched the modern kingdom — anchors the old quarter near Deira souk. Eat kabsa: spiced rice with cardamom, saffron, and slow-cooked lamb or chicken, the national dish done properly at places like Najd Village. Come November to February, when days sit around 20–27°C and evenings turn genuinely cool — this is desert, and summer hits the mid-40s with little shade at the archaeological sites, so avoid June through August. The cool, pleasant months are also peak Riyadh Season, so book fares early.
