Daegu is so reliably the hottest city in South Korea — a basin ringed by mountains that trap the summer air — that Koreans call it "Dae-frica." The dish to order is makchang: grilled pork or beef intestines, chewy and rich, eaten with soju at the table. Head to Anjirang Makchang Alley, a whole street of it. Two other things are worth your time: Yangnyeongsi, a herbal-medicine market trading roots and dried remedies since the Joseon dynasty, and Kim Kwang-seok Street, a mural alley honoring the beloved folk singer born here who died at 32, his songs playing as you walk. Come in April–May for cherry blossoms or September–October for clear, mild days. Skip July and August unless you genuinely don't mind 35°C with humidity.
