About Xi'an, China Xi'an was the eastern end of the Silk Road and China's capital for over a thousand years, which is why the Terracotta Army sits an hour east of town — thousands of life-sized soldiers buried with the first emperor, every face different. But the thing locals will tell you to do is rent a bike and ride the full 14km loop on top of the Ming city wall, the most complete one left in China. Eat in the Muslim Quarter, settled by Hui traders centuries ago: get roujiamo, the shredded-pork flatbread that beats any "Chinese hamburger" abroad, and belt-wide biang biang noodles. Come March–May or September–November for warm, dry days. Skip July–August: 40°C heat and the entire country's summer holidays.
