🏙️ Beijing comes free with this ticket — twice. Both connections are long enough to leave the airport, and they give you two quite different visits. Outbound you land at 09:30 and do not fly on until 08:30 the next morning — a full daylight day plus a hotel night, enough for the Forbidden City and Tiananmen at an unhurried pace. Coming home you land at 18:15 and leave at 14:10 — an evening, a night and a slow morning, which suits dinner in a hutong and the Temple of Heaven before you fly. Two cities on one fare, at no extra airfare. Leaving the terminal means entering China, so check the transit-visa terms for your passport before you fly — the routing note below carries the current rules. Staying airside is perfectly possible instead.
🌍 About Ulaanbaatar
Most people fly into Ulaanbaatar to leave it — the steppe and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park are an hour out, and the giant 40-metre stainless-steel Genghis Khan statue (the world's largest equestrian statue) stands about 50km east. In town, Gandan Monastery is the real anchor: a working Buddhist monastery with a 26-metre gilded Migjid Janraisig statue and resident monks chanting at dawn. Eat buuz, the steamed mutton dumplings locals make by the dozen, or khuushuur, the fried version. Time it for Naadam (11-13 July), the wrestling-horse-racing-archery festival that takes over the city. Come June to August for warmth; the cheap-fare winter months are brutal — Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital on Earth, and ger-district coal smoke makes it one of the most polluted from November to February.
