São Paulo is South America's biggest, richest, hungriest city, and the reason to come is to eat. Go to the Mercadão (Mercado Municipal) for the famous mortadella sandwich at Hocca Bar — a roll buried under a half-kilo of thinly sliced mortadella — plus a pastel de bacalhau. Then Liberdade, the Japantown built by the largest Japanese community outside Japan, where the weekend craft fair runs Saturday and Sunday and the ramen is the real thing. The pizza is genuinely world-class too, an Italian-immigrant legacy locals take seriously. Come April–May or October–November: dry, mild, and quieter. June–August is cool and the driest stretch if you don't mind grey.
