🌍 About Xiamen
Xiamen sits on China's southeast coast in Fujian, and the thing to do is take the ferry to Gulangyu, a car-free island of crumbling colonial mansions left by 19th-century foreign consulates and traders — go on the 7am boat before the day-trippers land. The local food is Minnan, not generic Chinese: order shacha noodles, rice noodles in a savory peanut-satay broth that locals eat for breakfast, and oyster omelette from a street stall. Xiamen University, right on the water, is genuinely one of the prettiest campuses in the country and worth a walk. Come April–May or October–November for warm, clear days without the heat. Skip July to September: it's the peak crowd season but also typhoon season, and ferries to Gulangyu shut down completely when one hits.
