🌍 About Kunming
Kunming is the "City of Eternal Spring" — Yunnan's capital sits at 1,900 metres on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, with temperatures hovering around 20°C year-round. It's the gateway to one of China's most diverse regions: the karst Stone Forest (Shilin) 90 km southeast, the Dianchi Lake shoreline on the city's southern edge, Green Lake Park and its tea houses in the centre, and the 25 ethnic minority cultures whose cuisine, textiles, and architecture you'll see in every market. The high-speed rail from Kunming reaches Dali in 2 hours, Lijiang in 3 — both classic Yunnan stops that combine well with this fare. Yunnan cuisine deserves the trip on its own: crossing-the-bridge rice noodles served at boiling-broth temperatures, steam-pot chicken with caterpillar fungus, wild matsutake mushrooms in season, and the country's best preserved ham from Xuanwei. Visa-free entry to China for EU citizens (incl. Hungarians) is in effect through end-2026.
