Doha is the hub most people in this series end up in, and the question is never whether there is
something to do — it is whether your particular gap is long enough to qualify for it. Discover
Qatar, which describes itself on every page as the destination management company of Qatar
Airways, sells four different products at four different thresholds. Here they are in the order
your layover length will hit them.
arrival and your scheduled departure, not the time you will actually have in the city. A six-hour
transit that qualifies for a three-hour tour leaves very little slack, and the tour returns you to Hamad
at its published completion time rather than at your convenience.
3 to 6 hours: you are staying airside
Below six hours Discover Qatar does not offer to take you out of the airport at all. What it does offer
is Discover Relaxation at the Airport — a massage, in its own words a
“stress-melting” one, for transits between three and six hours. Modest, but it is the only
product at that length and it beats the bench.
6 hours: the city tours
Six hours is where Doha opens up. Four city tours are sold, all three hours long except one variant,
all requiring a minimum six-hour transit.

The night tours are the underrated ones. Doha at 40 degrees in July is not a walking city; Doha at
midnight is, and the 22:00, midnight and 02:00 departures are aimed squarely at the long-haul banks that
land in the small hours.
8 hours: out of the city entirely
At eight hours the Discover the Desert and Inland Sea private tour becomes available:
four hours, priced around QAR 227 to QAR 305, running every hour from 06:00 to
14:00. This is the one worth planning a layover around — the Inland Sea at Khor Al Adaid is
a genuine sight rather than a hotel-lobby photo stop, and it is not reachable in a three-hour window.

more than the headline. And the tours are not suitable for passengers who cannot climb independently in and
out of a coach or walk for up to 30 minutes at a time — worth knowing before you book for someone
with limited mobility.
12 hours: a hotel instead
Past twelve hours the tours stop being the point and the stopover packages take over. Discover Qatar
sells four tiers, all quoted per person per night on double occupancy for a one-night stay, for
transits of 12 to 96 hours.

Note what the cheap tiers do not include: breakfast appears only at the Luxury level. And the packages
are open to confirmed ticket holders of Qatar Airways, code-share and oneworld member
airlines — so a British Airways, Finnair, Iberia or Malaysia Airlines ticket through Doha
qualifies. Very few carrier stopover schemes extend to an alliance.
The visa question
You need entry to Qatar for any of this: visa-free, pre-approved, or a visa on arrival. Discover Qatar
states that 102+ countries can enter visa-free, and that if yours is not among them you
can buy a Transit Visa for QAR 100 at its desk in the Duty Free area.
One small inconsistency worth knowing, because it tells you how precisely to read the number: the tour
pages say “102+ countries” while the stopover page says “100+”, on the same site on
the same day. Treat it as “about a hundred” and check your own passport against the Visit Qatar
list rather than trusting either figure.
Where to go when you land
The Discover Qatar Transit Tour desk is in Duty Free Plaza South, behind the
escalators at Hamad International. It takes last-minute bookings, sells the transit visa, and is
the meeting point where every tour starts. If you have booked ahead, that is still where you go.
Is it worth it?
The eight-hour desert tour, yes — it is the only product here that shows you something you could
not see in any other airport city, and eight-hour Doha connections are common on Europe-to-Asia routings.
The three-hour city tours are fine but tight; if your gap is six hours exactly, do the maths on the return
time before you book.

How long does my Doha layover need to be?
It depends which product you want. 3 to 6 hours gets you the in-airport relaxation option. 6 hours is the minimum for any city tour. 8 hours is the minimum for the desert and Inland Sea trip. And 12 hours is the floor for a hotel stopover package. Discover Qatar measures the transit between your arrival and departure flight schedules, not from when you clear immigration.
