Shandong Airlines runs a quiet, well-specified transit-accommodation scheme across four eastern
Chinese airports, and it does something the bigger carriers do not: it extends the benefit beyond
connecting passengers to people caught by an early departure or a late arrival. That is a genuinely
different category, and it comes with a genuinely different price.

Who it covers

The airline provides accommodation for qualifying passengers transiting through, or departing early
from, or arriving late into Jinan, Qingdao, Yantai and Xiamen. The service is one night’s
hotel accommodation, which must be shared, plus vehicle transfers between the hotel and the airport.

The fee nobody mentions. Shandong Airlines’ own wording notes that for the early-departure
and late-arrival group, a partial fee may be charged depending on the passenger’s cabin. So
“free transit hotel” is accurate for the connecting case and optimistic for the rest. If you
are claiming it because your flight leaves at six in the morning rather than because you are connecting,
ask what it will cost before you accept the room.

You will be sharing

The published standard is one person, one bed, one night, with two same-gender
passengers allocated to a standard room. Sole occupancy is available if you pay the difference. If no
passenger volunteers to share, the hotel assigns roommates in check-in order — so arriving late
does not get you a room to yourself, it just means you get whoever is left.

Who is excluded

  • Award and free tickets. Mileage and points redemption tickets, and all classes of
complimentary ticket, cannot book this service at all. Worth stressing because China Southern’s rule is
the exact opposite — it treats redemptions as normal tickets. Do not carry one Chinese carrier’s
    policy across to another.
  • Infants under 2 are not allocated a bed. Children aged 2 and above count as adults
for this purpose and may have their own bed. Age is measured at the date of the first flight.

Book early, and mean it

Shandong Airlines is unusually direct about scarcity: partner hotels release a limited number of rooms
each day, the airline cannot guarantee that every eligible passenger gets one, and bookings close when the
rooms are gone. Its own advice is to book as soon as your itinerary is confirmed.

Two channels: the Shandong Airlines app, under Service Center then Transit Hotel; or
the WeChat mini programme, under More, then Ticket Services, then Transit Hotel. Apply at
least one day in advance. The airline also notes that the specific hotels used may change at any time
depending on its partnerships, so the property you see at booking is what counts.

At Xiamen you have two options, and they are not the same

Xiamen is the one airport on this list where a second carrier runs a competing scheme, and the terms
differ enough to be worth choosing between. Xiamen
Airlines
publishes its own free transit hotel at XMN with named counters and phone numbers, and its
economy passengers share a twin room with a paid single-room option. Shandong Airlines gives you the same
basic shape — a shared bed and transfers — but bars award tickets outright, which Xiamen
Airlines does not.

If you are choosing a routing through Xiamen and expect to pay with miles, that single difference
decides it. Book the Xiamen Airlines connection.

A gap in what the airline publishes

One thing Shandong Airlines does not resolve clearly in public: the page carries a table of applicable
booking classes per airport, but does not spell out which cabins qualify at Jinan, Qingdao, Yantai and
Xiamen in a form you can check before buying. Given that the carrier’s siblings gate this benefit hard on
cabin — China Southern’s non-intercontinental rule effectively requires business class — treat
your own eligibility as unconfirmed until you have asked. Call 95369 with your booking class letter to
hand, not just your flight number.

Is it worth it?

If you are connecting through Jinan, Qingdao, Yantai or Xiamen on a Shandong Airlines through ticket,
plainly yes — a bed and transfers for the cost of a form. The two things to check before counting on
it are your ticket type, because an award ticket disqualifies you outright, and whether you fall in the
connecting group or the early/late group, because only one of those is reliably free.

Frequently asked questions

Which airports does Shandong Airlines cover?

Four: Jinan (TNA), Qingdao (TAO), Yantai (YNT) and Xiamen (XMN). You need a through ticket connecting via one of those cities, or an early-departure or late-arrival flight there.

Is it actually free?

For connecting passengers, yes — one night’s hotel plus vehicle transfers between hotel and airport. But Shandong Airlines adds a caveat most summaries drop: for the early-departure and late-arrival category, a partial fee may be charged depending on your cabin. Free is the connecting case, not every case.

Will I get my own room?

No. The accommodation is explicitly shared — the standard is one person, one bed, one night, with two same-gender passengers to a standard room. If you want sole occupancy you pay the difference. If nobody volunteers to share, the hotel pairs people by check-in order.

Can I use miles or a free ticket?

No. Shandong Airlines states that mileage and points award tickets, and all categories of free ticket, cannot book the transit or early/late flight accommodation service. This is stricter than China Southern, which treats award tickets as normal.

What about children?

Infants under 2 are not given a bed. Children aged 2 and over are treated as normal adult passengers and may occupy a bed of their own. Age is assessed against the date of the first flight.

How and when do I book?

Through the Shandong Airlines app under Service Center > Transit Hotel, or the WeChat mini programme under More > Ticket Services > Transit Hotel. Apply at least a day ahead. Rooms are limited and allocated first come, first served, so book as soon as your itinerary is fixed. The 24-hour service line is 95369.
