⏱️ The 23-hour Istanbul layover is the opportunity — not the catch.
The outbound stops in Istanbul (IST) for about 23h 25m. Rather than waste it in the terminal, claim it: Turkish Airlines’ Stopover in Istanbul programme gives economy passengers with a layover of 20 hours or more a free hotel night in the city, and runs free TourIstanbul guided tours for connections in the 6–24h window. That effectively turns this trip into Riga → a free night in Istanbul → Entebbe — two destinations on one fare. Book the Stopover through Turkish Airlines after ticketing, travel light through passport control, and confirm Türkiye’s visa-free / e-visa rules for your nationality first. The return layover is a quick 1h 40m, so no overnight on the way home.

🌍 About Entebbe
Most travellers only meet Entebbe as the airport — the gateway for gorilla and safari trips inland — but it's a calm town right on Lake Victoria, worth a day before or after the bush. The real reason to linger is Mabamba Swamp, a papyrus wetland about 40 minutes away and one of the easiest places on earth to see a shoebill: a metre-tall, prehistoric-looking stork you track from a wooden dugout canoe. Back in town, eat a Rolex — a chapati rolled around a fried egg-and-vegetable omelette, Uganda's signature street snack — and tilapia pulled straight from the lake. Come in the dry seasons, June to August or December to February, when birding and boat trips actually happen; the long rains of March to May turn the swamp tracks to mud.
