The two free nights are real and Etihad states them plainly. But the age limits, award-ticket bans and guest caps every round-up repeats do not appear anywhere on Etihad’s own stopover page. This guide separates what Etihad actually commits to from what the internet has decided on its behalf.

Etihad’s stopover programme is the simplest of the big Gulf offers to describe and the hardest to research honestly. The airline’s own page is short. Almost everything else written about it — the specific eligibility rules people quote confidently — comes from somewhere Etihad does not publish. So this page does two jobs: it tells you what Etihad commits to, and it tells you which widely-repeated rules you should treat as unconfirmed.

What Etihad gives you
Etihad’s wording is that you can “choose from the best hotels across Abu Dhabi with up to two nights free”, and its FAQ confirms the choice covers hotels in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. Al Ain is the inland oasis city near the Omani border — our own geographic note, not Etihad’s — and it makes for a genuinely different stop from the coast, which is worth knowing is on the table.
How to book it — the part that decides whether you get it
Etihad describes three steps. Note that its own page prints them in the order 01, 03, 02 in the markup; in sequence they are:
- Book your flight. A return flight with Etihad connecting in Abu Dhabi.
- Add your hotel stay. Etihad’s step reads, word for word: “Pick your hotel in Al Ain and let us know how long you’d like to stay for.” See the note below — its own FAQ is broader than that.
- Get your voucher. Once the hotel is booked, Etihad issues a voucher to present at check-in.
Which route you take depends on whether you have already bought the flight:

What Etihad does not publish — and why we are not filling the gap
This is the section other guides do not have, because filling silence with plausible detail is easier than admitting it. Search results will tell you the Etihad stopover requires you to be 21 or over, excludes award tickets, caps the booking at three guests, requires a round trip but only works in one direction, and imposes a 72-hour hotel deadline.
Two more genuine gaps worth naming:
- Etihad says “please call us” but publishes no phone number on the stopover page. Use the contact options on etihad.com for your country. We are not printing a number or an email we cannot source to Etihad.
- There is no published list of which hotels the free nights actually cover. Etihad names hotels on a separate Abu Dhabi hotels page, but that page is a general booking surface and the stopover page does not link to it. The real answer appears in the booking flow for your dates.

These are the properties Etihad lists on its Abu Dhabi hotels page, with its own one-line descriptions condensed. Treat this as the range Etihad works with, not a guarantee of what your free nights cover — that is confirmed only in the booking flow.

Etihad groups them as luxury, budget, business, family-friendly and beach. If you have one night and want the Abu Dhabi postcard, the Corniche and Saadiyat properties put you nearest the Grand Mosque and the Louvre; Yas Island is the theme-park and racing side of the city and a long way from the old town.
The Stopover Pass — small, free, easy to miss
Booking a stopover also gets you a complimentary Stopover Pass, which Etihad says saves up to 15% on tickets to major attractions, theme parks and tours. Three steps, in Etihad’s own words:
- Visit theabudhabipass.com/etihad-stopover-pass and select “Get pass now”.
- Register with your email address and contact number.
- Choose your pass and start exploring.
Etihad also publishes 24-, 48- and 72-hour Abu Dhabi itineraries, which are worth a look purely for pacing a short stop.
The visa point that decides everything
If your flight is changed or cancelled, Etihad says it will either rebook the hotel free of charge or refund it, subject to terms — so a schedule change should not cost you the stay.

Is Etihad’s Abu Dhabi stopover hotel really free?
Yes. Etihad states you can choose from hotels across Abu Dhabi with up to two nights free, and its FAQ confirms the choice includes Al Ain. You still need a valid UAE visa or visa-on-arrival eligibility, and you must book the flight directly rather than through a travel agent.
How far in advance do I need to book the Etihad stopover hotel?
If your flight is already ticketed, Etihad says to call at least three days before your flight to arrange the hotel. If you have not booked the flight yet, you can book flight and hotel together at etihad.com in one flow.
Can I get the free stopover if I booked through a travel agent or an OTA?
No. Etihad’s FAQ states plainly that flights booked through a travel agent are not eligible. This is the single most common reason people are turned down, and it is decided at the point you buy the ticket.
Do I have to be 21, and are award tickets excluded?
Those restrictions are widely published by third-party travel sites but do not appear on Etihad’s own stopover page. We are not repeating them as facts. If either would affect your booking, confirm directly with Etihad.
Which hotels does the free stopover cover?
Etihad does not publish a definitive stopover hotel list. It names a broad set of Abu Dhabi hotels on a separate page — from Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental and the St. Regis Saadiyat down to Ibis and Premier Inn — but the properties actually available on your dates appear in the booking flow.
What time can I check in?
Etihad says the stopover package includes a flexible 24/7 check-in and check-out policy, so the room is aligned to your flight times rather than standard hotel hours.
Do I need a visa for the Etihad stopover?
Yes — Etihad requires a pre-arranged UAE visa or eligibility for a visa on arrival. The hotel is landside, so there is no version of this that works without entering the country.
